The Pottering Basket

potter

verb

to move around without hurrying, and in a relaxed and pleasant way

I love my cleaning schedule. It works really well for the stage of life we are in and I find that I’m getting everything accomplished during the week that I want to.

A weird thing that you’re going to find out about me right at this moment, is that I love to clean. A lot. It’s my favorite thing to do. So of course when I’m done my cleaning schedule and I have a spare 30 minutes or so, I start pottering around the house.

Pottering is exactly what the definition says, simply moving around the home at a slow and relaxed pace tidying and cleaning as I go. Sometimes I have the opportunity to potter once a week, other times I have several pottering times.

I created a basket to accompany me on these pottering journeys, and here’s what I have in it!

  • Window & mirror cleaner

  • Rags - To dust and to clean windows and mirrors

  • Carpet cleaner - Folex

  • Lavender spray (I make this myself)

  • Eucalyptus essential oil and dropper - I add a few drops to all sinks and toilet bowls.

  • Ipad - Sometimes I’ll throw on a BritBox TV show to listen to / watch while I potter. It’s delightful.

Pottering basket: How to calmly clean your space

What I do when I’m pottering

  • Touch up windows that need to be cleaned with my window cleaner and rag

  • Think about solutions to any problems I’m having

  • Spot treat the carpet if I see any stains (I use Folex)

  • Dusting. This is my main dusting time where I take care of all surfaces. I use a damp rag, that’s it.

  • Add essential oil to toilets and sinks

  • Think about life

  • Put away random stuff I find lying around

  • Water plants

Basically, bits and bobs!

I find this time incredibly calming and centering. I feel like pottering really allows me to look at the entire home and tackle anything that needs to be corrected ASAP.
