What the heck is hair training and why you should probably look into it

What is hair training?

To put it simply, hair training is is teaching your scalp and hair (and yourself) to go longer between washes without producing excess oil (returning to its natural amount of oil production). If you’re like me and are an everyday hair washer, not washing every day may be terrifying to think about. But, trust me (and experts) that your scalp needs oils that shampoo and styling products can strip away, ultimately leaving your hair brittle, falling out (like me) or just totally unhealthy.

The benefits of hair training:

  • Less oil production on your scalp which means less greasy looking/feeling hair

  • For color treated hair not washing every day will actually help prolong the color

  • Less money spent on products

  • No more putting chemicals in your hair and scalp

  • Less time in the morning getting ready

  • Overall healthier scalp and hair (hooray!)

The idea is that by throwing a ton of hydration and gentle kisses at your scalp along with letting your natural grease hang out without being washed away, your scalp will get the signal to decrease its oil production.

I had tried in the past to train my hair to only wash it once a week. I used dry shampoo and then had to spend about an hour washing my hair once a week just to remove the build up. After realizing just how many aerosol cans I was throwing out (along with my money) and the ingredients in dry shampoos, I decided to ditch hair training and go back to my normal routine of washing daily.

Fast forward

to September and I realized how damaged my hair was becoming. I haven’t had a haircut in almost 8 months (thanks pandemic!) and I normally have one every quarter. So, my hair is longer than normal along with fine and it was screaming at me to do something to change my hair care because it was angry at me and starting to fall out. Hooray.

I decided it was time to bite the bullet and drastically change my routine WITHOUT the help of products. I wanted to return to simplicity. I didn’t want to obsess over my hair, wondering when I should be using dry shampoo or washing. Like my no makeup routine and focus on skin care, I figured I could do the same thing for my hair! And I did!

My method and tools

  • I shampoo and condition my hair twice a week with Moroccan Argan Oil Shampoo and Conditioner on Wednesday and Saturday. My goal is to cut out one wash and just shampoo and condition my hair once a week.

  • I don’t blow dry my hair after washing, instead I let it dry naturally.

  • I don’t use any products on my hair. Including hair spray, dry shampoo or anything else. I try to keep the scalp as clean as possible.

  • On top of not using a hair dryer I also don’t use anything else like curling irons, flat irons or products.

  • I try not to touch or play with my hair.

My hair schedule

I follow the same sort of styles for specific days:

  • Wednesday - clean hair and wear down

  • Thursday - wear down

  • Friday - Wear down or in a ponytail, depending on oil production

  • Saturday - Wear in bun

  • Repeat

Want to give it a go? Here are some tips.

  1. Remove all hair products including dry shampoo, hair spray, gels and serums. After a week or two assess how your hair looks? How is it feeling? How does your scalp feel?

  2. Don’t touch your hair. Just like dermatologist say don’t touch your face, same goes with hair. The more you touch it the more your scalp will react and produce oil.

  3. Research and then research some more. As I mentioned, my hair is straight, fine and colored. You probably have completely different hair which may need additional advice. Google and Pinterest for the afternoon and find more information!

  4. Have an extra pillow case and change it out every couple of days.

  5. Working out? This isn’t a concern for me because I don’t work out (lol), but if you do there are some amazing tips in the above articles to help!

If you’re feeling like your hair’s a bit unhealthy lately or just looking for a personal project, hair training could be right up your alley! Let me know if you try it!
